Color Guard moves in From the Cold

Practice for Indoor Color Guard will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at Henderson High School. Monica Morrison will be returning as coach

Time to Speak Up

It has come to our attention that next year Peirce students will not be permitted to march or compete with the Henderson Band. This decision was not made by the School Board. It is our belief that the School Board is not aware of this situation.

As a parent of a former Peirce student who did march with the Henderson Band, I know how beneficial and enjoyable it was for her. I know that there are others of you who feel the same way.

We need to let the Board know of the positives associated with our middle school children being members of the Henderson Band. We can do this by attending the Monday, Nov. 26, School Board meeting and letting our opinions known to the Board.

In order to speak at the Board meeting, you must call the Board secretary this week so that you can be put on the agenda for the meeting. If you do not do this, you will not be able to express your opinions to the Board. The secretary's phone number is 484-266-1125. Remember, that the District offices will only be open on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week because of the holiday.

I do urge everyone who has had or currently has a Peirce student in the Band to attend the meeting and let the Board know in a very positive way about this decision that has been made and your feelings regarding this decision. Let them know about the pluses associated with your child being a member of the Band.

If you think they look hot and tired, you're right!
They were very thankful for Mrs. Otto's watermelon and freeze pops that day!

More Hershey Photos

Here are some pictures of the championship I just got back from the developer. They are of the band warming up before the competition. I say warm-up, but as everyone remembers it was freezing.I was really impressed that the band was able to stand in this parking lot for at least an hour before performing and warm-up, and freeze, and then put on their best performance of the year.

Mike's trombone teacher, who has been involved with marching bands for years and who was at Hershey, told him that the Henderson band put on such a great performance and that they set the bar so high that other bands had to really reach just to get close. It is a real testament to the dedication of the band members and the coaching they received.

There are also two pictures of the parents at the tailgate before the show.

Veteran's Day Parade '07

Apologies in advance for the paucity of photos of our Warriors marching in the Veterans Day Parade. We were not at the top of our reportorial game on Sunday, having scarcely recovered from a fantastic previous Saturday event at Hershey Park Stadium.

This is It!

Our Band will be competing in the championships on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Hersey Stadium. We hope that everyone can come to cheer on our kids—including the Parade Band members and families. The Band will be leaving Henderson at 2 p.m. They are scheduled to perform at 5:45 p.m., and awards are at 8:45 p.m.

To carry on the tradition, the Booster Parents will be tailgating before the performance in the stadium parking lot. We hope that all will be able to come! We will be parked to the left of the box office. Look for the blue canopy. We are asking everyone to contribute something to the tailgating—appetizers, main dish, drinks, etc. We will probably need some tables, too. You might want to bring lawn chairs with you to eat in comfort! We plan to meet at 4 p.m. in the parking lot.

To continue another tradition, we will be serving dinner to the Band after their performance. We are asking all parents to provide something for this as well. Whatever you bring for the tailgating, just make more so that we will have left to serve to the band. Please have the food in containers and a way to keep it cold or hot until we serve them.

The Boosters will be providing hoagies for the Band, so we are looking for food that will complement the hoagies. We will also need soda, water, etc. for them. The Boosters will take care of paper products and plastic ware.

PLEASE CALL CAROL OTTO AT 610-430-6555 TO LET HER KNOW WHAT YOU WILL BE BRINGING ON SATURDAY.

******ALSO, CAROL WILL NEED SOMEONE TO PICK UP THE HOAGIES ON SATURDAY AND TRANSPORT THEM TO HERSHEY. SHE WILL BE LEAVING EARLY TO HELP WITH THE PIT AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE HOAGIES. WE WILL BE ORDERING FROM WAWA ON MARKET STREET, AND THE HOAGIES WILL BE PAID FOR. YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO PICK THEM UP AT THE DESIGNATED TIME. CALL CAROL IF YOU CAN DO THIS.

Warning to Band Parents and Guardians

Please do not turn on your headlights while the Warriors are practicing on the field at Fern Hill Elementary School. Doing so is annoying and dangerous. The lights distract the band members and cause accidents. The color guard is especially vulnerable.

Please be courteous and leave your lights off!

Too Far for Me Blues

Holy Mazzoli! That competition in Allentown was so far away that I almost forgot I was there and took a bunch of pictures. Whatever: I know I sound like I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, so I'll shut up and let you have a look at these pictures. But before I let you go I gotta tell you that after the shots of my kid, my favorite is the one of the guard flipping their guns into the air. It's wild.

Foul Weather Duty: Avon Grove Photos

Here are some photos from the Band's night at the Avon Grove football game. It rained the whole time. The band took it in stride however, and seemed to enjoy the event. As you can see from the pictures, there was not a huge crowd at the game. Please excuse some of the photos, it was tricky to take pictures and hold an umbrella at the same time. A couple of times the umbrella got in the photo. At lease it wasn't windy or cold.

Cavalcade at Reading, Saturday Oct 20

This Saturday's competition is at Albright College, near Reading High School. Henderson is scheduled (so far) to perform at 7:15pm.

Here are Cavalcade directions:

Take PA Turnpike West to Morgantown exit (Old Exit 22, now Exit 298). Follow I-176 North until it ends – stay in the left lane. That lane will ramp onto 422 West. Follow 422 W until you exit right at Route 12 East. Proceed on Route 12 East about 4 miles to exit for 11th Street. Exit right, and stay in the right lane onto North 11th Street, heading south. Left at first traffic light (Rockland Street). Then one long block to a “T” at North 13th Street. Right onto North 13th Street, 2-3 blocks. Stadium is on the right.

Click Here for Yahoo! Map directions - about one hour drive supposedly.

PS HEY BAND FOLKS - Jon asks me to remind you to polish your marching shoes :)

In prep for our first competition - tomorrow at East HS - we're having pizza and drinks at Henderson after the practice: 3:15pm or so.

By the way, Mr M. got permission to practice for the competition, rather than go to the Football game and play.

Awesome Blues

Please Help

I just completed making calls to arrange for pick ups of the Peirce Marching Warriors for this week.

I was thinking that it would be a lot easier for me and less bothersome for you with my phone calls if you could take a look at the dates below for Warrior practices after school and let me know either by e-mail or phone call what dates to which you can commit. That way I would not have to bug you with a million phone calls asking for volunteers.

Here are the dates that I need volunteers for the pick ups:
First of all, Bob delGrosso has volunteered to be one the parents for every Tuesday. Thanks, Bob! Also, Deborah Anderson has volunteered for four days in October, so you will only see that one parent is needed on certain days.

Monday, Sept. 25 -- One parent
Thursday, Sept. 27 -- Two parents
Friday, Sept. 28 -- Two parents
Thursday, Oct. 4 -- One parent
Thursday, Oct. 11 -- One parent
Tuesday, Oct. 16 -- One parent
Thursday, Oct. 18 -- Two parents
Tuesday, Oct. 23 -- One parent
Wednesday, Oct. 24 -- Two parents
Tuesday, Oct. 30 -- One parent
Thursday, Nov. 1 -- Two parents
Monday, Nov. 5 -- Two parents
Tuesday, Nov. 6 -- One parent
Wednesday, Nov.7 -- Two parents
Thursday, Nov. 8 -- Two parents

Full Swing

Looks like we are getting into the fall routine -- practice, marching, and selling food! Great Friday evening -- and I hear the flags are coming along! (Oh - so many pieces!)

First competition is planned for September 29, in the Cavalcade at East High School.

While there were a handful of band families squeezing in their end-of-the-summer vacations, the 'pep' band played some great tunes for Friday's season opening football game - thanks!

And the concession stand go off to a good start, too. Chick-Fil-A? Not bad, but can't wait for the real thing - dogs and fries!

Mr. L

Oh yeah - Henderson Football won :-)

Last Night's Festivities

Here are some shots of the dinner and performance following the Warriors return from band camp at Saginaw. We apologize in advance for the quality of the photos but we are suffering from the combined impact of being at the bottom of the learning curve with a new digital SLR and the lack of a telephoto lens.

Report From the Front

Having returned almost two hours ago from an overnight at Camp Saginaw, I feel empowered to say that the Henderson Marching Warriors are working hard and sleeping very little. Last night they rehearsed and drill until about 10:30, had to be in their cabins by 11:15 and lights out at 10:40. Roll-out was at 6:00 (Argh!)

The boys in my cabin (6) comported themselves like the fine gentlemen we all know they are. The only thing that gave me pause was what I perceived to be an anomaly in their taste in music. Since when do 21st century teens obsess over Cream, The Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin? Am I missing something here or is this not very odd?

Come to think of it, there was something else. At about 2 o'clock in the morning one of the boys in the row of bunks opposite my own was "reciting" drum lines in his sleep. Very odd indeed.

But seriously, if you all could have seen those kids lining up at 6:30 to march single-file into the morning mist it's break your heart with pride. Mine certainly did.

Shout Out for Help!

Car Wash!

Our last car wash for the year is this Saturday, August 18, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It's at the LukOil on the corner of Boot Road and Route 100.

We need parent volunteers to come help out!

SOS!!

We are in need of parents to take snacks to Saginaw each afternoon (Monday through Friday). Usually, the parents have the snacks delivered at 3 p.m. each afternoon. Snacks, such as, watermelon, ice pops, Popsicles, etc., are taken to the kids to refresh them during their afternoon break.

If you could be one of these parents to take snacks down one afternoon, please give me, Carol Otto, a call as soon as possible.

I do have some ice pops that can be used for the snack for one or two afternoons. My problem is that I do not have enough room in my freezer right now to accommodate all 500 ice pops! If you think you can make the drive down one of the afternoons, I would be more than happy to give you a box to freeze in your freezer and then take down to Saginaw. Just let me know.

Carol Otto
